Unit 22: D1 - Meeting The Brief

The INDI Film Festival in Leeds is a great opportunity for young filmmakers to showcase their talents to a wider audience. In this project you will be asked to develop a script for a short film in a recognised genre of a maximum of 10 minutes.

Strengths of my script

Overall I am happy. I have used a mixture of detail in action blocks as they are dominant over speech to help create suspense and meet the genre of a Psychological Thriller. They would allow a director to be guided as to plot and general direction of the short film due to their descriptive and specific nature, whilst some of the shorter action blocks leaves the film open for interpretation and gives the director creative control.
I have also met what I aimed to achieve when writing the script; a film that addresses a serious problem with a catastrophic ending. I wanted there to be an unnerving ending to shock viewers and for them to deeply consider the matter than I have addressed and hopefully draw attention for young girls to their vulnerability. Finally I have successfully met the brief and kept within the 10minute time boundary by using a standard script format of 1 minute per page.

Weakness of my script

I fear that my script may struggle to create a large enough emotional response for there audience as the short nature of there film doesn't allow for time to really get to know and emotionally connect with Grace's characterAlthough the dialogue and action blocks build up empathy for Grace's character through her growing in distress and giving up by the end, it would have been nice to see how she interacts other than her Therapist, perhaps zooming in on the relationship with her Mum. However, with an ambitious but chilling ending, the audience are very likely to still feel a sense of distress and emotional release when they here the kidnapper's footsteps at the end.

Opportunities

If my script were to be used in the future, there are many different processes it would have to undergo.Firstly, the director and the story board artist would work closely together to create a scene-by-scene representation which allows film makers, advertisers and the producer to evaluate the project before the beginning of the film. Then, the director and story board artists will take the artistic vision to the director of photography to produce a shooting script. This happens once the film has been given the go ahead and aspects like camera angles and close-ups will be discussed and written down. The script will then be given to the cast of the film and each actor will read the whole script thoroughly to get a good idea of their lines and physical acting. This will enable them to present the character in a way that suits the script.
As the film is being
shot,  many people occupying different roles will use it at the same time. The location manager will use it to decide where and when each scene should be shot. The camera operator will use the shooting script so they know what, when and where to film. The director will use the script to help them put the film together in their creative image. The sound operator will use the script to see what sounds or music should be heard at different points in the film.

I also think that my film could be developed into a longer feature film. I would just add more scenes and create a more in-depth story line including the sub-plot of Grace and her Mum's relationship to create a more emotional response.

Threat

A possible threat is bringing the mental image i have created for this film, to life. This is especially relevant in the second scene when Grace is walking home at evening and the kidnapper is seen behind her. Although the scene is supposed to be set late in the evening, the visuals may be difficult to capture when it begins to get dark. Due to this, i will have to film earlier which may mean pedestrians are in the background which may cause continuity issues between shots and also remove the feeling of isolation and sense of realism from there kidnapping. To counteract this problem, i will have to ensure that i pay attention whilst editing and filming to ensure the continuity issues are kept to a minimum and perhaps pick a location that is likely to be less populated at the time i choose to film.
