P2: Job Roles

Job Roles 



Production Role: Music Supervisor
Description: Proposes previously recorded song to the director producer. Will usually act as a liaison between create and business ends of the process
Responsibility: To choose recorded songs that fit with the mood and feel of the movie.
Use of script: To identify where songs or sound effects are needed and what type of mood is needed to created in that particular part of the film.
Key skills: Need to be able to negotiate and cooperate on ideas

Production Role: Actors
Description: Interpret script and bring it to life and to commit to the characters they portray
Responsibility: To bring their characters to life
Use of script: To learn their lines and bring their characters to life.
Key skills: Memorising lines and put across a convincing performance

Production Role: Editor
Description: Edits the raw material after shooting to make it suitable for broadcasting, Also, they add the special effects to create a striking piece to broadcast to public.
Responsibility: Responsible for assembling recorded raw material into a finished product that’s suitable for broadcasting.
Use of script: To identify the scenes and to determine which bits can be cut out that aren’t needed. They cut scenes together with different transitions and to create different paces in order to build tension or create a certain mood to the film.
Key skills: Need to be able to use editing software and be good with technology

Production Role: Cinematographer
Description: They oversee the selection and manipulation of technical equipment to create striking images on screen
Responsibility: Responsible for managing camera crews and lighting crews
Use of script: To figure out where they can use technology to manipulate the piece to create a particular image which would capture the message of the film and engage the audience.
Key skills: Needs to be good with technology and specific software to create the look needed by the film

Production Role: Art Director
Description: Typical activities include: leasing with clients to determine their requirements and budgets; developing concepts; graphics and layouts for product; illustrations; company logos and websites
Responsibility: Responsible for most of the promotion and figuring out the layout and style of the piece
Use of script: To determine whether the production contains the clients requirements and figuring out if any graphics will be needed
Key skills: Need good negotiation skills and organised to meet tight schedule

Production Role: Costume Director
Description: Crates outfits worn in movies, television shows or theatre productions. These costumes must represent the time period, place and personality of the character
Responsibility: Responsible for creating costumes that relate to the characters and feel of the piece
Use of script: To allocate which costume is worn in which scene for each individual character. Also, if a costume has to be altered for a particular part of the scene (e.g blood on a costume) the costume designer would use a script to identify when this alteration will be needed.
Key skills: Needs to be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines and to be creative

Production Role: Production Designer
Description: They identify a design style for sets, locations, graphics, props , lighting, camera angles and costumes, while working closely with the director and producer
Responsibility: Responsible for the visual concept of the film, television or theatre production
Use of script: Adds details such as location, lighting and camera angles etc…
Key skills: Need to have good people skills and be creative

Production Role: Director
Description: Controls a film’s artistic and dramatic aspects and visualises the screenplay (or script) whilst guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of the vision.
Responsibility: To guide the actors and film crew in order to fulfill their vision
Use of script: To keep track of which scene they are on so they can direct all other members of the production company and create the scene how he envisioned it
Key skills: Needs to be creative and be able to work well with people

Production Role: Producer
Description: Oversees each project from conception to completion and may also be involved in the marketing and distribution process. They work closely with directors and other production staff on shoot.
Responsibility: Their responsibility is to oversee each project from start to finish
Use of script: To keep track of which scene they are on
Key skills: Needs good negotiation skills and cooperation skills

Production Role: Screenwriter
Description: The writer of the script of the film. They create the dialogue, the characters and the story line of the movie script. Often the most essential person in the film production because no movie can start without some form of script
Responsibility: Writes the script which contains the dialogue, characters and storyline of the production
Use of script: They must make the script
Key skills: Need to be creative and willing to negotiate changes in the script if needed.

  1. Really great but needs to be a bit more detailed, especially on the ‘use of script’ (this is the main one assessors look at for your understanding). If I had no clue about the role, would I know all I can about it from reading your notes?
