Practice Pitch:
Main Feedback to takeaway:
-Write trigger words on my notes rather than full informative sentences so I can present my ideas more inclusively to the clients rather than looking down at the paper
-Include more informative about the plot (taken out from proposal)
-Draw on Prison Break due to similar themes.
Since then, i have added a slide on my proposal and my pitch presentation which explores similar series and why they were successful, such as Prison Break and Luther. This highlights the qualities of my series which are likely to be popular.
Along with this, i rewrote my notes to ensure they cover the plot of DUPLICITY is enough detail but also in a more condensed form so i can engage more with the Clients when presenting and be more enthusiastic.
Questions
What are the main ways you can see yourself differentiating the series from similar crime dramas, as its a popular genre?
I aim to largely focus on the psychology behind why the characters are doing what they're doing, why they're committing crimes and what has lead them to do it. In the series the twins lose their mother at a similar age to the target audience, age 16 which, is a difficult age with lots of changes anyway and the Drama will explore how the two different twins are impacted by this trauma and how they have coped with the situation. This means that Duplicity will draw on childhood events seen in flashbacks so viewers feel like they know the characters on a deeper level and understand the complexity of humanity and how the brain copes.
Along with this, the black community is represented by the protagonists, which is uncommon for a crime drama, except from the exception of Luther and True Detective, and deals with both the racial issues and discrimination. Additionally, Duplicity with illustrate the heroic qualities of the characters despite their race and present them as handsome characters that are likely to cause 'female gaze' and elevate the characters.
Similarly, the strong female character, Madison, breaks the weak, 'damsel in distress' stereotype of women by being unafraid of Cason despite his dangerous and unpredictable life of crime, whilst also teaching him about his own morality.
Due to this, Duplicity breaks stereotypes and represents underrepresented groups which will reinforce the personal identities of viewers who can relate and also allow surveillance to the struggles faced by them.
How does the series end?
After being asked this question, i realised i need to include a more in detail synopsis for each episode in the series in my pitch to ensure the BBC3 clients understand the plot and the direction it goes in. Despite doing this in my proposal, it's important i am able to illustrate this vision to the clients through my speech, in an engaging way, and not through a wordy presentation slide which is likely to bore them.
In the final episode, Madison has been taken in by the police but refuses to give any information on Cason. She rings him and they agree to run away together but the phone call is tracked and they are both held. The series ends with a mysterious, suited man entering prison to talk to Garret, who has decided to do whatever it takes to get out of prison, and reveals he has some news.
How would you appeal to the wide age range of the target audience (15-35)?
Since the pitch, i have realised that the target audience was too broad and i needed to narrow it down. The characters are around 23 and so would act as role models and surveillance for younger viewers whilst enforcing personal identities for viewers in their early twenties. For older viewers, the series is less likely to appeal as the characters are younger and the content is possibly too transgressive. Due to this, i have since changed my target audience to 16-15 year olds. Despite this, i still believe that Duplicity will appeal to both male and female viewers because of the strong female representation which will reinforce womens' personal identities and the handsome characters which will likely cause 'female gaze' along with the twins which will reinforce personal identities for men.
How do you think it has potential to run on to another series if it was successful?
The series could easily be continued as the final episode is left on a cliffhanger and many questions are left unanswered:
Who is the mysterious man?
Is he the same man that Cason made a dodgy deal with?
What news did he bring?
What will happen to Cason and Madison?
What was in the mysterious package?
Will Garret be realised?
The second series would follow the first in a linear pattern and continue the story as viewers will likely be invested in the characters, the relationships and the plot.
